FIFA has announced the name of the Official Match Ball for the 2014 FIFA World Cup. The FIFA World Cup 2014 ball will be called the Adidas Brazuca”. The name was selected by a public vote that received responses from more than 1 million Brazilian football fans, with 70% of the votes going to ”Brazuca”

Adidas, the official FIFA World Cup match ball supplier since 1970, took inspiration from elements of Brazilian culture to come up with a shortlist of three possible names for the ball. It was the first time that fans were directly involved in choosing a name for the ball. Apart from Brazuca, the other 2 names in contention were Bossa Nova and Carnavalesca.

The informal term “brazuca” is used by Brazilians to describe national pride in the Brazilian way of life. Mirroring their approach to football, it symbolises emotion, pride and goodwill to all.

Although the name of the ball is now clear, fans will have to wait a little bit longer until they can actually see the Adidas Brazuca ball. It is currently being developed and tested worldwide with several football clubs and associations ahead of its launch for the 2014 FIFA World Cup.

However, many believe that a prototype of the Brazuca ball was used in the international friendly played between Argentina and Sweden earlier this year.

Every World Cup, since 1930, has had its unique official football. The design of the ball has changed quite a lot since 1930. Here’s a look at all the balls that have been used by FIFA since the World Cup in 1930.
