Less than a week into the FIFA World Cup 2014, and we have seen some amazing football on display by all the 32 participants of the 2014 World Cup. Apart from one or two matches here and there, all the matches of the Group Stage so far have been exciting, with nail biting finishes and a lot of goals. The World Cup has till now lived up to its reputation of being the best football tournament.

It is a dream for every player to score a goal in the World Cup but it is something special if a player can score the best goal of the World Cup. Here are some of the FIFA World Cup 2014 Best Goals.

1. Robin van Persie – Netherlands vs Spain, June 13FIFA World Cup 2014 Best GoalsThis has got to be the best goal of the 2014 FIFA World Cup so far. Spain led Netherlands 1-0 and the Dutch attack had barely anything to do in the first 45 minutes. Van Persie equalised in the additional time with a piece of individual brilliance as he threw himself acrobatically at Daley Blind’s fine pass and looped a header over Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas. After the game, van Persie admitted that this was the greatest goal of his career.

“It is the best goal of my career. It was a brilliant goal, even I have to say that. I look at the occasion and this was one of the biggest so far in my career. It was a bit of a gamble but I spotted Casillas off his line before the cross came in.”
2. Haris Seferovic– Switzerland vs Ecuador, June 15

Ecuador were ready to make one final attack in the game, when Valon Behrami made a game-saving tackle on Michael Arroyo to restart the play and send Seferovic streaking downfield. Ricardo Rodriguez crossed the ball and Seferovic thumped it home past a helpless Alexander Dominguez, as the Swiss snatched victory in the dying stages of the match.
3. Tim Cahill – Australia vs Netherlands, June 18

Tim Cahill’s goal vs Netherlands was no short of what Robin van Persie had managed to pull off vs Spain. After Arjen Robben had sent Netherlands in the lead against Australia, Tim Cahill scored in what will be remembered as one of the best goals of the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Cahill smashed a floating cross from Ryan McGowan on the run with his weaker left foot, with the ball cannoning in off the bottom of the crossbar. After the game Cahill said,

“When you look at your idols like Marco van Basten and even Robin van Persie, they’re the sort of goals they score”.

“You dream as a kid for these opportunities. At home in my garden I score like that every day but this is what’s it’s all about.”

4. Lionel Messi – Argentina vs Bosnia, June 15

Lionel Messi shrugged off his World Cup blues by scoring an absolutely incredible solo goal against Bosnia and Herzegovina. The goal proved to be the match winner for Argentina as they beat Bosnia 2-1 to start their World Cup campaign on a positive note.

In the 65th minute he scored a goal befitting of the iconic 78,800-seater stadium, collecting the ball deep and exchanging passes with Gonzalo Higuain before darting past a pair of defenders and slamming home via the base of the left-hand post. This was only Messi’s second goal in the World Cup finals but in the end proved to be match winning.
