The national football team of Germany is considered to be an epitome of world class attacking football. The team has won 3 World Cups (1954, 1974, 1990) and have been the runners-up on four occasions. As per the 2014 FIFA World Cup Draw, they have been placed in group G along with Portugal, Ghana and U.S.A., potentially making up the Group of Death at the 2014 FIFA World Cup. Let us have a look at the Germany 2014 World Cup Squad.
Coach: Joachim Loew
Best Finish: Winners – 1954, 1974, 1990
Worst Finish: 1938 – First Round
Team: Germany’s squad consists of world class players be it strikers, midfielders or defenders. Players like Bastian Schweinsteiger, Thomas Muller, Sami Khedira, Tony Kroos and above all the midfield maestro Mesut Özil are the biggest strengths of the team. With Phillip Lahm as their captain and a goalkeeper of the quality of Manuel Neur, the team continues to have an advantage over its group mates and other teams in the competition.
Strengths: Germany are known for their attacking style of football as well as the technical ability of their players. Germany is a team that doesn’t rely on one or two superstars but they work together as a team. German football has seen significant rise in the past and that was proved in 2013 when 2 teams from Germany played out the Champions League final. With a young squad at his service, Joachim Loew can expect his team to lift the World Cup trophy that has eluded them for so long.
Weakness: With a team so strong as Germany, one finds it hard to point out any weakness in this team. However, Germany have not won any major tournament since the 1990 World Cup. They lost in the final of the 2002 World Cup to Brazil, then in the 2006 semi final to Italy and finally in the 2010 semi-final to Spain. Spilling their chances in big games is the only weakness one can find in this squad.
What to watch out for: Miroslav Klose, with 14 goals, is the second highest goal-scorer in the history of the World Cups. With the 2014 World Cup set to be his last international tournament, it will be interesting to see whether he can become the all time top goal scorer of the World Cup ahead of Brazil’s Ronaldo(15).
