Germany 4-0 Portugal 2014 Highlights: Match Review
Thomas Muller scored a brilliant hattrick as Germany defeated Portugal 4-0 and started their World Cup campaign in an absolutely wonderful style.
Cristiano Ronaldo and Portugal were humbled as Germany ran riot against a 10 man Portugal side as Pepe was sent off and Fabio Coentrao picked up an injury, making it a day to forget for Paulo Bento.
It was expected to be “the best group stage match of the World Cup” but as it turned out, it was the most one sided match of this World Cup till now. Portugal’s Star man Cristiano Ronaldo was completely helpless as he saw a spirited German squad tore apart their defense and that will raise many question on their ability.
Thomas Muller put Germany in front after just 12 minutes through a penalty, after João Pereira brought down Mario Gotze in the penalty area. This was Muller’s sixth goal in the World Cups.
Germany then doubled their lead in the 32nd minute after Mats Hummels headed a corner into the Portugal net, making things worse for the Portuguese.
However, the game was put to rest in the additional time of the first half as Bruno Alves paid the price of poor defending, allowing Thomas Muller to score his second of the night.
Muller then completed his hattrick in the second half after a tight angled kick from Schurrle wasn’t dealt with properly by Rui Patricio, and Muller was quick to pounce on the opportunity.
Muller now heads the Golden Boot rankings with 3 goals, while Neymar, van Persie and Arjen Robben are tied on the second spot with 2 goals each.
