Uruguay secured a hard fought 1-0 victory over Italy in their final group game and qualified for the 2014 knockout stage. Italy have been knocked out of the group stage for the second consecutive time.

Uruguayan captain Diego Godin scored off a header in the 81st minute to send Uruguay into the Round of 16 in what was a must win match for both the teams.
Uruguay needed to win this match whereas a draw was enough for Italy to go through the Round of 16 in this last match of the Group of Death.
The first half of this high profile encounter went a bit slow with both the teams failing to create any major opportunities. Uruguay had the best chance in the first half as Luis Suarez latched on a good ball but was stopped by an onrushing Buffon. The score remained 0-0 till half time.
The second half saw Uruguay enjoy most of the possession and started to create a few more chances. Italy got a shock in the second half as Claudio Marchisio was sent off for a reckless challenge on Arevalo. The decision looked a bit harsh on the Italian but Italy were now down to 10 men.
Uruguay kept on creating chances but Italy were strong in defense with goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon blocking most of the shots directed towards him. However, Uruguay’s moment of glory came in the 81st minute when captain Diego Godin headed a bullet of a header past Buffon and into the bottom corner to give Uruguay the all important lead.
The match took a controversial turn as Luis Suarez was once again seen biting an opposition player, this time Giorgio Chiellini. The Liverpool striker was seen leaning his head into Chiellini and got an elbow in his mouth in retaliation. Both players went down but soon after the Juventus defender ran up to the referee showing off a bite mark on his shoulder. Suarez was lucky to stay on the pitch as the referee missed his bite this time.
Uruguay though, managed to hold on to their lead for the remaining 19 minutes as Italy were knocked out of the FIFA World Cup Group Stage for the second consecutive time. Uruguay will now face the winners of the Group C, i.e. Colombia which will be an all South American clash of the knock out stage.
