Mexico 2014 World Cup Squad: Team Preview

Miguel HerreraCoach: Miguel Herrera

Best Finish: Quarterfinals – 1970, 1986

Worst Finish: Group Stage (16th Position) – 1958

Strengths: During qualifying matches for the World Cup it became clear that Mexico is excellent at attacking right until the very end of a match. They scored around 35% of their goals in the last 15 minutes of matches. Furthermore, the team proved excellent at defending long-range shots and only allowed one goal to be scored that way.

The team’s midfield is particularly strong with players such as Carlos Pena and Luis Montes playing excellently during qualifying matches.

Weakness: The team isn’t among the heaviest scorers out there. They failed to score in a third of qualifying matches and never managed to win a match once they’d fallen behind.

The team also suffers from defensive problems. Most of Mexico’s defenders are 30 plus and that that leads to a lot of chances being created for the opposite teams.  The defender’s poor form will be a big worry for Miguel Herrera as Mexico look to surprise football pundits with an eye-opening run this summer.
