Today’s Picture of the Day features Real Madrid and Portugal forward Cristiano Ronaldo in action during their World Cup friendly match vs Ireland that was held in MetLife Stadium, East Rutherford, New Jersey. The 2013 Balon d’Or winner returned from injury to inspire his team to an easy 5-1 victory over Ireland as he played 65 minutes to wrap up his preparations for the World Cup. Ronaldo had missed Portugal’s past two friendlies due to a knee injury but was declared fit to play in the final friendly against Ireland. Ronaldo’s presence will be a huge boost for the Portugal national team, considering the fact that they are so much dependent on Ronaldo for their success.
Although Ronaldo could not score any goals in the match, his presence was such a huge influence on the Portugal team, who had found it so hard to score in their previous two friendlies. A first half brace from Hugo Almeida and a Richard Keogh own goal had already closed all the doors for Ireland. In the second half, a goal each from Vieirinha and Fabio Coentrao sealed a comfortable 5-1 victory for Portugal.
Portugal open their World Cup campaign in a tough group stage match against Germany that is believed to the most anticipated group stage game of the 2014 World Cup.
