Spain 2014 World Cup Squad

Espana as they commonly say it or the national football team of Spain is by far the best football team in the World. The team is well known for its habit of ‘winning’ major tournaments and the results of the past 6 years proves it. In 2012, Spain became the first team to win three major international tournaments in a row, having won the Euro 2008, the 2010 World Cup and the Euro 2012. And they will be the favorites once again to win the FIFA World Cup 2014. This time, Spain have been been placed in group B alongside Chile, Australia and the 2010 World Cup runners-up Netherlands. Here is a quick preview of the Spain 2014 World Cup Squad

Spain 2014 World Cup Squad: Team Preview

Vicente de Bosque Spain TrainingCoach: Vincent Del Bosque

Best Finish: Winners (2010)

Worst Finish: Group Stage (1998)

Nickname: La Furia Roja (The Red Fury)

Current FIFA Rankings: 1

Team: The Spanish team is quite famous for its style of play. When it comes to passing or ball control, there is no other team as good as this one. Players like Andres Iniesta, Xavi Hernandes, Xavi Alonso and Cesc Fabregas prove to be the brain of the team and manage the team’s midfield in the best possible manner.

The Spanish defence is also considered to be one of the best in the world. Players like Carlos Puyol and Sergio Ramos with their years of experience pose great threats for their fellow rivals and opponents.

Captained by one and the only Iker Casillas, who won the Golden Glove Award in the 2010 World Cup, Spain continues to have strict dominance over the sport.

Strengths : The style of play that Spain are famous for is Tiki-taka which involves short passing, patience and above all possession. Spain give a lot of focus on team play and possess capabilities like accuracy and ball control. Every individual is considered as an integral part of the team. On top of it, all the Spanish players have the ability to keep ball possession for a long period of time during the game owing to their world class passing and ball control. Although criticized by many for making the game slow and boring, Tiki-taka has been used successfully by the Spanish national team to win UEFA Euro 2008, 2010 FIFA World Cup and UEFA Euro 2012.

Weaknesses : Spain have been very consistent over the past 6 yeras and it is pointless to pin point any weaknesses (if any) regarding the team. However, personally I feel that the team lacks in speed and quick attacking ability. The team’s attacks are not as great as its midfield and defence. Moreover, the 3-0 defeat to Brazil in the Confederations Cup final only emphasized the difficulty of the task facing them and has left many doubting whether they can maintain their stratospheric levels of performance in Brazil this summer.

What to watch out for: The 2014 World Cup will surely be the last World Cup for the players that were a part of its “golden generation”. Xavi, Casillas, Xabi Alonso and Carlos Puyol will not be around in 2018 and it will be interesting to see how these players sign off.

Other news: Victor Valdes will miss the entire World Cup following a cruciate knee ligament injury which he picked up while playing against Celta Vigo. Also the Brazilian born Diego Costa is set to feature in Del Bosque’s Starting X1 following a brilliant season at Atletico Madrid where he is currently the second highest scorer behind Cristiano Ronaldo.
