It was supposed to be an easy match for the strong Uruguayan side, who started with star player Luis Suarez on the bench. The first half went a bit slow, with Costa Rica enjoying the better part of possession but both teams failed to capitalize on any chances that were created. The first half ended with the score being 1-0 in favor of Uruguay. The second half began in the same way, with Costa Rica enjoying a fair share of possession. They then equalized in the 54th minute through Joel Campbell after a cross from out by the corner flag was deflected by Borges and Campbell then finished with an exquisitely struck kick.

Costa Rica then took the lead through Duarte within 3 minutes after Bolanos’ delivery was headed into the Uruguayan goal by Duarte.

Uruguay tried hard to get back into the game but were dealt with by a determined Costa Rican side. Costa Rica then finished any chances of a Uruguayan comeback after M. Ureña made it 3 after Campbell cut through the Uruguay defense with a lovely ball that was finished well by Urena in the 84th minute.

Uruguay now face the prospect of being eliminated from the Group Stage as they now face 2 highly difficult matches against England and Italy which wil be do-or-die for them.
